PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers have released tight end Zach Gentry as they finalize their 53-man roster, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

Gentry is entering his fifth NFL season, all with the Steelers, and re-signed with the team during free agency. However, with the emergence of third-round rookie Darnell Washington, the team has decided to keep just three tight ends and are moving on from their former draft pick.

Gentry played 40 games for the Steelers, including 26 starts, and caught 39 passes for 303 yards. He was considered the team’s best blocking tight end the last three seasons.

Pittsburgh will head into the season with Pat Freiermuth, Washington and second-year Connor Heyward at tight end. The team has not yet announced whether or not they’ll keep fifth tight end Rodney Williams, who is likely considered a practice squad member if Gentry is claimed off waivers.
