PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Russell Wilson have agreed to a one-year deal, adding the Super Bowl champion to their roster, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Wilson visited with the Steelers over the weekend and is now set to sign for the league minimum of $1.2 million, Schefter reports. He’ll join Kenny Pickett on the roster.
Wilson, 35, will now have an opportunity to compete with Pickett for the team’s starting job this season. Working on a minimal deal, the Steelers still carry roughly $28 million in salary cap space into free agency, allowing them to bulk up their roster around two promising quarterbacks.
Wilson went 7-8 last season but threw for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns to eight interceptions. The nine-time Pro Bowler will join his third NFL team in hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl, and the Steelers believe they have the roster around them to make it happen.
As for what happens next, head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will develop a plan on how they’ll go about a quarterback competition, and decide which of the two options they believe gives them the best shot to win.
The Steelers typically have three quarterbacks on the roster during the regular season, so expect them to add a third – which could be Mason Rudolph.
