PITTSBURGH, PA — For a second year in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers are making headlines about the NFL Draft and quarterbacks. This year, it’s not for their next franchise QB or Ben Roethlisberger’s successor. It’s for Kenny Pickett’s backup, and in 2023, a third-stringer.
The Steelers made news when they brought in Houston quarterback Clayton Tune for a pre-draft visit. Immediately, questions arose of whether or not Pittsburgh was considering using a late-round pick on a QB, with reactions coming from both sides about support or distaste with the decision.
Now, they’re bringing in another quarterback, BYU passer Jaren Hall, according to Trib Review’s Joe Rutter.
Hall started his final two seasons at BYU, throwing for 6,174 career yards and 52 touchdowns. He also ran for 800 yards and nine touchdowns, and actually has 41 receiving yards and a score as well.
Hall’s athleticism should make him an intriguing name for teams looking to add anyone with a workable skillset late in the draft. Of those teams, the Steelers will need a quarterback, and Hall’s ability to run makes him an interesting option.
The Steelers tried to land an athletic late-round quarterback last year with Chris Oladokun. Unfortunately, they found themselves in a rut when Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Pickett competed for the starting job and Oladokun was left stranded with almost zero reps all summer.
This year, they’ll be looking for that third quarterback. And typically, they actually bring four QBs into training camp.
At this point, there’s no denying they have some interest in the late-round quarterbacks in this draft class. Hall and Tune both appear to be names to watch, and could be a sneaky pick with one of the Steelers’ two seventh-round selections.
