PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers will keep Mike Tomlin around in 2024, as the head coach has told his team he plans to return next season despite reports of stepping down, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Tomlin reportedly told players and staff in the team’s final meeting that the speculation around him stepping away from the team are “unfounded” and that he plans to return for the 2024 season.
This comes after weeks of reports claiming he could step away from the team in the offseason and consider taking time away from football or would look for the team to trade him elsewhere. The most recent report came from NBC’s Mike Florio, who said he would discuss the decision with his family before committing to next season.
He was asked about the situation following the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round of the playoffs but walked out of the press conference instead of answering.
Tomlin has one year remaining on his current contract, but Team President Art Rooney II said during training camp this past summer that he expected an extension to get done.
“We’ve done the contract at different points and people seem to read more into that than is warranted,” Rooney told Steelers Nation Radio. “The contract will get done when it needs to get done. As Omar said, I expect Mike to be here a lot longer than the existing contract. We’ll get it done when the time comes.”
Tomlin is set to address the media one last time before the offseason officially begins for the Steelers.
