PITTSBURGH, PA — Former NFL quarterback and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is trying to join the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff but isn’t having much luck.
According to The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly, Leftwich has reached out to the Steelers with the intent of joining the staff as an offensive consultant. The idea was floated around throughout the offseason as speculation grew that offensive coordinator Matt Canada could be fired. However, Kaboly reports that the Steelers have been “ignoring him.”
Leftwich played for the Steelers in 2008, backing up Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. As a coach, he was part of the Bucaneers’ Super Bowl run in 2020 as the team’s offensive coordinator.
While the start of Leftwich’s time was strong, his finish was more struggle. In his first year, the team finished with the third-most yards per game average. By his final season, they ranked 15th and finished with an average of 18.4 points per game, ranking 25th in the NFL.
If Leftwich were to join the team as a consultant, he’d take on a role much like Brian Flores did on defense last season. As of now, there’s no expectation that will happen, or that any staff changes will be made for the Steelers this season.
