PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed outside linebacker Alex Highsmith to a new four-year, $68 million contract extension, the team announced, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the financial details of.
Highsmith is coming off a career-high season, recording 14.5 sacks, 63 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits and a league-leading five forced fumbles. He was sixth in the NFL in sacks.
Highsmith joins T.J. Watt with contract extensions keeping the group together for the next four seasons. The former third-round pick becomes the seventh-highest-paid outside linebacker in the NFL.
Highsmith’s extension is worth $68 million, added to his 2023 salary, making it a five-year, $70 million deal.
Next up for the Steelers will be tight end Pat Freiermuth and running back Najee Harris, who have two years left on their rookie deals. The Steelers will also need to figure out the future of Cam Heyward next season.
As for Highsmith, he was hoping to get a deal done before training camp to avoid a hold-in. He’ll now be on the field with no issues as the team prepares for the 2023 season.
