PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers have their new cornerback. After going after an offensive tackle in the first round, and making a trade, they stayed put at pick 32 and held on to select Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Porter was expected to be a first-round pick to the Steelers at 17. Instead, they waited to find him in the second round.
The Steelers used their first pick on Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones, trading up from 17 to 14 with the New England Patriots. They gave the Patriots pick 17 and 120 in the move.
Porter comes to the Steelers with some of the best testing at the NFL Combine, running a 4.42 40-yard dash and having a 42″ vertical jump. His time at Penn State ended 113 tackles, 20 pass deflections and an interception.
Pittsburgh has picks 49, 80, 241 and 251 remaining. They’ve been reported to be searching for a trade back into the fourth or fifth rounds.
