LATROBE, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding to their inside linebacker room, signing former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Forrest Rhyne, the team announced.

The team also announced they’ve waived/injured linebacker Chapelle Russell.

After signing as an undrafted rookie out of Villanova, Rhyne spent the 2022 season with the Colts. He played in three games for Indianapolis, making his NFL debut against the Steelers in Week 12. He contributed strictly on special teams.

Inside linebackers, Nick Kwiatkoski and Russell, both left against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and did not return. Kwiatkoski is dealing with a shoulder injury, while Russell has an ankle injury. With the signing of Rhyne, it likely means Russell is expected to miss some time before being able to return to the field for whoever signs him next.

Rhyne will compete with Mark Robinson, Tanner Muse, and possibly Russell/Kwiatkoski for this season’s final roster spot. He’ll have two weeks to prove his worth before the team is forced to trim their roster down to 53.
