PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers are two days away from their arrival at Saint Vincent College for training camp, but one of their biggest names is in question about his participation.
Over the last few weeks, the conversation about second-round pick Joey Porter Jr. not signing his rookie contract has come up. But until now, that conversation has been more so about how unlikely it is he holds out or doesn’t have a deal done in time.
Now, with 72 hours before players take the field for the first time, that concern may be growing.
Porter and the Steelers have yet to agree on a contract for the 32nd overall pick. It’s likely the position of his draft is the difference between the two sides, as Porter would be a first-round pick with that 32nd pick in a typical draft and therefore have a different number to work with when it comes to guaranteed money.
Will the Steelers and Porter agree on a deal before the start of camp? Chances are still high that it’s a yes. The Steelers don’t want their rookie cornerback to start on the wrong foot and Porter doesn’t want to miss an immediate opportunity to make an impact and compete for a starting job during training camp.
It may not happen until players arrive in Latrobe, but until there’s an actual holdout, don’t expect one. That being said, Porter Jr. is the biggest storyline to watch before the Steelers arrive at camp.
