PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to release quarterback Mitch Trubisky as they begin their offseason, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Trubisky was considered a top candidate to be released this offseason due to his $5.25 million cap hit in 2024. With his release, the team saves roughly $3 million in cap space. He was signed through 2025, set to make $8.3 million next season.
Trubisky, 29, signed with the Steelers two years ago with plans of being their starter in 2022. After just four games, he was benched for Kenny Pickett. He since started three games with Pickett dealing with injuries, but was eventually benched for Mason Rudolph this past season.
He finished his time with the Steelers 2-5 with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
With Trubisky gone, the Steelers are done to just Pickett on their roster. They intend to try and re-sign Rudolph, but are expected to bring in an outside quarterback this offseason to compete with third-year Pickett. If it’s not Rudolph, they could look in free agency for names like Ryan Tannehill, or through a trade with names like Justin Fields and Desmond Ridder being linked to Pittsburgh.
