It’s looking more likely that the Pittsburgh Steelers will move on from former third-rounder Mason Rudolph. More specifically, the team will likely trade the veteran quarterback. NFL Network insider Ian Rapaport reported that the black and gold are getting interest from around the league.
The Detroit Lions are possibly one of the interested teams, as head coach Dan Campbell admitted the team may trade for a veteran QB. The Steelers and Lions even face off against each other on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium in the last preseason game.
While the trade rumors have continued to circulate and even increase over the past few weeks, Rudolph is trying to remain focused on football. While it’s been a disappointing career for him in Pittsburgh, perhaps a fresh start could be just what he needs. The Lions do have Jared Goff as the starter, but Rudolph could be the No. 2 guy in Detroit.
“My understanding is there is some interest around the league in a potential trade of Mason Rudolph,” Rapaport reported on NFL Network. “It sounds like the Pittsburgh Steelers would listen at the right pirce. We’ll see come Tuesday if they’re able to due a deal for Rudolph.”
If the Steelers don’t reach a trade involving Rudolph, it’ll be interesting to see if he remains on the team. With the unknown of rookie Chris Oladokun, the team would perhaps just opt to keep Rudolph in that scenario as the No. 3. Rapaport’s inclusion of “at the right price” may suggest the team is indeed open to keeping the veteran QB around. While he’s not long-term option as a starter, he does remain a valuable backup.
Rudolph has been clear with his feelings in regards to the quarterback competition this off-season. In fact, just over a week ago, he admitted to feeling as if he hasn’t gotten as many first-team reps as he deserves and expected to get. At the beginning of training camp, Rudolph had some bright spots and was even the team’s most consistent quarterback for awhile. Playing the third-team defense likely did help him a little bit though, and eventually, Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett began to outperform him. As a result, he was officially relegated to third-string QB.
Do you think the team will trade Rudolph? If so, what team and what do you think the return will be? Are you comfortable with a guy like Oladokun as the team’s No. 3 QB?
